My Portion, My Cup…

Do you ever feel short, awkward and fat compared to the people around you?  Ability-wise, I mean? I do.  Today, for instance, I was looking at someone else’s blog site. Wow! It had all the bell’s and whistles.  So fancy compared to mine, with moving graphics, colorful sections, music and…and…If I’d had the courage to stay longer, maybe confetti would have shot from the screen!  “Too much!”  I thought.  “I could never do that!  Who’s got the time?!”  But, then I realized, I was trying to drink from somebody else’s cup.

The Bible says the Lord has prepared a table before me — my table with my food to eat, with my own cup to drink from…not someone else’s. **

Have you read “The Hobbit”?  Imagine Bilbo sharing a grand table with tall noble people; kings and queens, ambassadors, elven leaders, and wizards.   He might notice how gracefully they lift their cups to drink and feel clumsy in contrast because he has to hold  his big cup, which is too big for him,  with his two little hands as he sips awkwardly, careful not to spill while the noble creatures about him grasp theirs with one hand, confidentally, taking  large droughts while they laugh and toast one another.

And he might notice their long, noble strides as they take their leave of the table compared to own his short, crude steps.

Sometimes that’s how I feel…like a hairy hobbit.  Do you feel the same?  BUT, take courage, my fellow shire-mate!  Our cup is filled with a brew that strengthens us as we drink.  The more we drink of His cup, the stronger we become; the more sure of ourselves.  Our strides increase, our stature grows, till we are transformed into one of the noble creatures, and we can hold our cups with one hand and look eye to eye with the great and the tall.

So, drink up!  Your cup will overflow with His wine when you reach it up to Him for filling.   And it will overflow, spill over.  You will do wonderous things, “too much” for you to handle in your own strength.  Maybe even with bells and whistles! [You] can do everything through Him Who gives [you] strength!   Philippians 4:13

Camping 101, VI: Setting up Camp

Here’s a few tips for picking a proper campsite:

First, is it on high ground? “…lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.”  Psalm 61:2

and is the ground level? “Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.” Proverbs 4:26

You might need to clear away some brush and debri: “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”  Hebrews 12:1

How’s the view? “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Thy law.” Psalm 119: 18

“Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.” Luke 10:23

Are there lots of animal tracks?  This could indicate a high traffic area and should be avoided: “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith…”1Peter 5:8-9

Ok, Camper, now you’re ready to pitch your tent.  Do you have someone to share it with?  It’s best, for safety reasons, to have a partner on your trip.  The Camper’s Guide has provided a camping partner free of charge:  Camping Partner

Camping 101, V: Fire

According to the Camper’s Guide (Bible), fire is essential.  camp fireEvery Camper needs a fire to keep warm by and to keep predators at bay.  It’s also handy for toasting marshmallows and hot dogs.

So, here’s three fire tips from the Camper’s Guidebook (Bible) to keep your hears warm:

1. Campers needs to be careful with fire…

It can quickly get out of hand ~~ “Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” James 3:5-6

2. Campers need to be careful to keep their fires lit ~~ “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  Do not put out the Spirit’s fire…hold onto the good.  Avoid every kind of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22

3. A camper should never play with fire (sin)~~ “Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?”  Proverbs 6:27

Need help starting a fire? Kindling and matches

Camping 101, IV: Water

Twin Lakes, ColoradoWATER…The need for water is not to be underestimated for the modern camper.  It’s important, then, to either pack enough water for the entire trip, or set up camp next to an ample supply…

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord…He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”  Jeremiah 17:7-8

“…Jesus… sat down by the well.  When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ‘Will you give me a drink?’  The Samaritan woman said to Him, “You are a jew and I am a Samaritan woman.  How can you ask me to give you a drink?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans)  Jesus answered her, ‘ If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water…whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up into eternal life.’  The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, give me this water…’  John 4:6-15

John (the baptizer) answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Luke 3:16

“Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” Luke 8:25

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council.  He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.’

In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’

‘How can a man be born when he is old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!’  Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.’ ”  John 3:1-6

Are you thirsty?  “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.  Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.  Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live.” Isaiah 55:1-3

Whoever believes in me (Jesus), as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” John 7:38

Camping 101,III: Light

video camera pics 398Campers need a dependable source of light for dark trails.  How’s your light?

“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105

“When Jesus spoke… He said, ‘I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ ”  John 8:12

“The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it…He was in the world and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.  He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God…”  John 1:5, 10-12

“Bless the Lord, Oh my soul!  Oh Lord my God, Thou art very great; covering Thyself with light as with a cloak…” Psalm 104:1-2

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”  1 John 1:7

Need more light? ~~”If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  1 John 1:8-9

“…if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

Camping 101, II: Storm Preparedness

7_lightning_protection_1w475h35811It’s important to be prepared for inclement weather, because a camper is likely to encounter storms…

Oswald Chambers, a camping expert, advises, “Watch for the storms of God.  The only way God plants his saints is through the whirlwind of his storms…Will you be proven to be an empy pod with no seed inside?…let God send you out through his storm…”

“Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm.  Brace yourself like a man; I will question you’ and you will answer me.  Would you discredit my justice?  Would you condemn me to justify yourself? Do you have an arm like God’s?  Can your voice thunder like His?” Job 40:6-9

“His thunder announces the coming storm; even the cattle make known its approach.”Job 36:33

“Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea– the Lord on high is mighty.”  Psalm 93:4

Do you know who to call for help in a storm? ~~ “In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears…  He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet… Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning.  The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.  He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.  He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes who were too strong for me.” Psalms 18: 6-17

“He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” Matthew 8:26
