Koala Baby Faith

“Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him.” ~Psalm 42:5

I’m taking a sign language class this summer at my local junior college.  I like how the signs that the deaf use to communicate actually look like real things.  It makes it easier to remember.

The sign for “hope”, for instance, is:

"Hope", from Deaf Missions (click pic to see more and visit their web-site)

To me, it looks like hanging onto something.

And what is the Christian supposed to hang onto?

God, of course.

Like it says in that verse above, “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him.”

We’re supposed to hang onto Him like a Koala baby:

And when human daddy’s give their kids piggy back rides, they have to stoop down first to be at their level so he/she can climb on.  Then the daddy can lift the child high into the air.

Which reminds me of this verse:

“…You stoop down to make me great.” ~~Psalm 18:35

God bent down to our level when He sent Jesus to us.

He stooped down from all his glory in heaven, so His children could climb onto His shoulders.

And He lifts us up,

out of the darkness

And carries us into the light.

Let’s Pray:

Father, as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are your ways so much higher than ours. (Isaiah 55:9)

Yet, you humbly bent down to our level, so we could climb aboard and ride out eternity with you.  Thank you, thank you, for saving me out of the miry clay (Psalm 40:2)

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

“He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay.  And He set my feet upon a rock, making my footsteps firm.  He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to my God…”  ~~ (Psalm 40:2-3 NASB)

As the deer panteth…

After riding our bikes a looooonnnngggg time, I wanted to quit. My tires were full, but my energy was flat.

So, it was a relief when my husband signaled a stop.

What a difference a little food and water makes.  A deep drink from my water bottle, a few bites of granola, and I was ready to go again.

Is your faith flat?  Maybe you need a drink.

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God.” (Ps. 42:1)

Are you hungry for more?

Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” (Ps. 34:8)

Drink deeply from His Word.

I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands.”  (Psalm 119:131)

Let’s pray:

Oh, Father, thank you for filling me up when I call on You.

You are able to make ALL grace abound to me, so that in ALL things at ALL times, having ALL that I need, I will abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)

You are able to do immeasurably more than ALL I could ask or imagine, according to Your power that is at work within me. (Ephesians 3:20)

Thank you, Father.  Please help me to see when you signal a stop in my day so I can get filled up again.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ants, Slugs, and Spiders! Oh my! Part III, The Spider!

Ooh, the spider!  *goose bumps*

Science Fiction and Hollywood CANNOT top the the spider’s menacing creepy-crawliness.  Although, they’ve tried their hearts out in movies like Alien and Predator:

"Alien-vs-Predator", click on pic for source

They’re pretty creepy, alright, but how does this make you feel?

or this?

Oh, sure, there’s always a joker in the crowd:

Happy Face Spider, click pic for source

But, overall, spiders are VEWY SCARWY *tears, whimper, shiver* to most of us.

And, for many, an encounter like this:

might lead to this real quick:

BUT, do you know what’s REALLY scary?

Living without knowing God.

I can’t imagine how much MORE frightening scary times would be without Him.

This is what the Lord says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches,  but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord. ~~ Jeremiah 9:23-24

Stop, Drop, and Pray!

Let’s pray:

Oh, Father, how nice it is that You “delight in kindness, justice and righteousness in the earth”.

I am SO glad I know you.  Oh, may I boast in that to everyone in my corner of the world.  I love you, even if you did make spiders, and ants and slugs and such.

May I love you even more and more each day and understand you better and better.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Do YOU know Him? Click the “Stop, Drop, and Pray!” picture above to be introduced.  Go on!  It’s not scary at all. 🙂

Ants, Slugs, and Spiders! Oh My! Part II — The Slug

Know how to kill slugs? Give ’em beer!  It’s true.  They’ll belly right up to any you put out in the garden!  Who knew?

How ironic, since isn’t that the universal beer-lover body shape — soft and shapeless, like a slug?

I consulted a gardening book for advice to rid my garden of the slimy, pudgy things and it recommended  putting out empty plastic water bottles on their sides throughout my garden, or shallow butter tubs, each filled with an inch or two of “a puddle of death”.

The slugs will slime in for a sip gulp,  and drown.  In the morning, speaking of belly-up,  I should find them floating that way in the beer:

Another irony, because, if we’re not careful, we all have food, drinks, or things we love that could drown us.

What’s your puddle of death?  Mine, ironically, was beer.  So glad I gave up my slug-ish ways before I drowned.

The slug prayer:

Oh, Father, you are awesome.  Thank you that if I belly up to your Word I will find peace and tranquility that will last more than one night, and won’t add calories to my figure!

May I be totally addicted to you.  Fill me with Your Presence.  In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

“You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” ~ Psalm 16:11

Ants, Slugs, and Spiders! Oh my!

I’m going to have a lot of questions when I see Jesus face-to-face.  And one of the first is, “What’s with the ants, slugs, and spiders?!”

I have them all over and around my house these days.

Stomping and swatting has become the norm.

I  stomped on a few ants on the way to the fridge this morning, hopped over a few (million) slugs on the front step to get to the newspaper,

and, because we live in the woods,  I ALWAYS, always, always have to watch where I put my hands outside the house, ’cause I might feel this:

wolf spider with babies on her back

or this:

Black Widow Spider

I can understand God making chocolate, or mountains, or furry little kittens, but ants? slugs? and spiders?!

Well, today I start a three part series on the creepy-crawlies about my house.

My new motto is: If you can’t beat ’em, learn from ’em.

We’ll start with the ant.

Like I said, our kitchen’s been crawling with them.

So, I put out some poison on the counter.

Some sweet, sticky poison.

They swarmed it like a watering hole in desert!!!

They thought they’d found a little heaven on earth.

Reminded me of our toxic culture.  The movies, the TV shows, the music.  It’s so sweet.  So we suck it all down.

"There is a way that seems right...but in the end it leads to death." ~ Proverbs 14:12

And who gets the last laugh?

The Ant Prayer: “Jesus, You are truly sweet.  The Bread of Life, the Bible says.  Oh, may I taste and see that You are good. (Psalm 34:8)  Change my wants from cheap thrills to You. Fill my soul with food that will last. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

“Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed.”  ~~ Proverbs 9:5

Rod Blagojevich Hair and Other Poofy Thoughts

Gotta love hair products!

I put some in my hair last night and woke up with Rod Blagojevich hair — POOF!

My natural hair is kinda flat.

And so is my natural attitude sometimes, now that we’re on the subject.

Ever wish there was a product that you could use to fluff up a bad attitude?  Something you could “apply liberally, and comb through“?

Product? No.

But there is a Person…

And there’s power in that name!

Take yesterday, for instance. (oh, read on, it’s a short story.  You can take it.)

I was in the middle of a long bike ride with my husband.

My tires were full, but my attitude was FLAT.

I was moaning, “I hate this ride….I hate this ride…I hate this ride.” with every pedal stroke.

It was kinda catchy, but I needed a new song quick.  This one was bringing me down.

So, I started singing, “I love you, Jesus.  I love you, Jesus.  I love you, Jesus.” in rhythm with my pedaling instead.

Kinda like the song Buddy, the Elf, sings to his dad in the movie, “Elf”:

Nothin’ fancy.

But my insides poofed up.

I felt like I was riding along on a bicycle built for two;  Jesus in the front, doing all the work,  and me singing in the back.

Yup, there’s power in that name.

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” ~~ Proverbs 18:10

“ the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW…every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” ~~ Philippians 2:10-11

Feeling deflated?

Speak the name of Jesus, liberally, call on Him.

Let His love “comb through” your heart and soul.

Your natural attitude will be transformed into…Blagojevich hair!   Poof!!

no matter what language you sing it in,

the Product’s guaranteed 🙂

Lessons from the World Cup: “…please, do not blow your vuvuzelas.”

What was that annoying, please-swat-me, buzzing sound emanating from my TV when I tuned into the World Cup?!

Can you say, “vuvuzela”?  (voo voo ZAY luh)

What in the world cup is a vuvuzela?!  Watch and learn:

Forgive me for tooting my own horn here, but when we “have not love”, I think we’re being “vuvuzela Christians”.

See? —

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.”  1 Corinthians 13:1

It’s all about love…

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Let’s pray:

Oh, Father, you ARE love, the Bible says. (1 John 4:8b)

I want to be like you, so I’m trading in my clanging horn of selfishness for your  patience, kindness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22)

May my life be a “sweet, sweet sound in Your ears” (from song below).

In Jesus name, Amen!

Faith when your tires are flat…

my husband and son changing a flat on a windy day.

Why doesn’t life behave itself?!

I mean, getting a flat on a bike ride isn’t bad enough. Sometimes, like today, you have to get two!  That’s what happened to my poor little Lance-Armstrong-wanna-be husband this morning when he was out riding in the country, far, far from home.

And, sometimes — even worse –good people die horrible, agonizing deaths.

And, sometimes — whether we like it or not — and no matter HOW HARD we try, we have a bad hair day.  (Hey!  You have your tragedies, I have mine.  Don’t judge.)

That’s life.

BUT, like Chip Ingram ** (a pastor) reminded me on the radio yesterday, “Life is hard, but God is good.”

And, like the song says, “If you can’t trust His hand, trust His heart.”

God has a gooooooood heart:

God IS love, the Bible says. (1 John 4:8)

And who does he love?

I don’t why, but He does!

He does!!

He does!!!!

Stop, Drop, and Pray!

Let’s pray:

Oh, Father, you so loved us that you gave your only Son so that whoever would dare to believe in Him would not perish, but have eternal life with you.  (John 3:16)

You comfort us when we’re down, and, not only are you compassionate toward us, but the Bible says you are “The Father of Compassion”.  ( 2 Corinthians 1:3)

You stoop down to make us great. (Psalm 18:35)

He strengthens the weak ( Ephesians 3:16) and You love children (Mark 19:14).

may we “have power… to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that we may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of [You].” (Ephesians 3:18-19)

You are able to do way Way WAY more than we anything we could imagine! (Ephesians 3:20)  In Jesus’ mighty, powerful, loving name, AMEN!”

“ him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” ~Ephesians 3:21

The Late Keith Green

~The late Keith Green~

I After I typed that, “the late Keith Green”, I thought, no, he wasn’t late.  God sent him at just the right time — the hippie free-loving generation.  He fit right in with his big hair and beard, but the free love he shared was Jesus’.

He died in a plane crash when he was young but his message survived and still encourages today.

See what I mean?

“Just dare to believe in him.

There are so many people around who are afraid to believe because all they’ve seen of Jesus is “Church-ianity”…

all they’ve seen of Jesus is religion.

They’ve been turned off by the hypocrisy…

but there is a real Jesus.  And there are real Christians running around. ”  ~  Keith Green, singer/songwriter (1953-1982)
