Solitude II

“How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise Him!”

Read the following Psalm out loud as you listen to Nearer My God to Thee (right click to open in new tab/window)….

Psalm 148

Praise the Lord.  Praise the Lord from the heavens,  praise Him in the heights above.

Praise him, all his angels,

praise him..   Praise Him, sun and moon,

praise Him, all you shining stars.

Praise Him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.  Let them praise the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created.  He set them in place for ever and ever….. Praise the Lord.”

Tell God your worries.  Pour them out like water before the Lord.   Lamentations 2:19

Did you do it?  Now, tell the Lord if you’ve hurt anyone’s feelings, or been selfish, or lazy, or given in to a bad habit, or done anything that would grieve the Holy Spirit.  Tell Jesus and He will forgive you.  “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

Now, pray about your day.  “Commit to the Lord whatever you do…” Proverbs 16:3

Review your day, ask Him for safe travel, if you’re driving around today.  Ask Him to help you to work with all your heart at your job.  Not just when the boss is around, but all the time.  Colossians 3:22

Are you married?  Ask for strength to love your spouse.  Are you a parent? Ask Him to help you love your kids and appreciate the funny things they say and do.

Ask the Lord for a sense of humor while your at it, and for eyes to see all the beauty around you.  Ask him to help you to focus on what’s good and true and right, noble, and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart.  Lean not on your own understanding.  Acknowledge the Lord in all your ways and He will make your paths straight.”   Proverbs 3:5,6

Whew!  Now sing with Fernando Ortega,  Amazing Grace (right click, open in new tab/window) “… How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed….”

Solitude liberates us from entanglements by carving out a space from which we can see ourselves and our situation before the Audience of One.  Solitude provides the private place where we an take our bearings and so make God our North Star.” ~ Os Guinness

One of my favorite hymns is  In the Garden (right click to open in new tab/window).

Here’s the heart of it:, “I come to the garden alone…

And he walks with me,

                                       and He talks with me,

and He tells me I am His own.

And the joy we share while we tarry there none other has ever known.”

Solitude…say it out loud….Solitude.

It’s a 4-letter word to someone who hates to be alone…

…but a lifeline for the Christian.

Beloved, come away...”  Songs 8:14

Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.”  Matthew 11:27-28

Make the time.  “Carve out a space”, as Os Guiness said above, to go to a “private place” where you can “take your bearings and so make God [your] North Star.”
