Anchovy Faith

anchovies -vs- swordfish

My family’s been watching the Life series on the Discovery Channel, narrated by

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey.

Tonight’s episode was about the fantastic and sometimes grotesque lives of ocean fish.

One fish, in particular, really caught my attention — the anchovy.

Now, on my pizza, I’d rate the anchovy in the grotesque category, but in their ocean habitat they definitely  fantastic.

Swimming together in a shiny silvery mass, called a shoal, they dart around as one due to their highly developed sensory system.

And sticking together makes them really tough to catch.

A shoal of anchovies

Because no matter how quickly a predator like a marlin, or a shark dives at the shoal, their teeth flashing, mouth opened wide, the shoal quickly dart away in a mass or spreads out into a circle that the predator plunges through, empty-mouthed and frustrated out the other side.

“The fishes unity is its strength.“, Oprah Winfrey narrates, ” The exasperated predator gives up and goes after easier prey.”

Remember this scene from “Finding Nemo” starring Anchovies? (or maybe Sardines, or herrings.  They all swim the same)

And here’s a clip showing the real thing:

Now, the Anchovy has an important lesson to teach today’s Christian.  Why?  Well, first, they’re a salty little fish swimming about in a great big ocean.  Sounds like us.  We’re supposed to be salty little Christians in this great big world.  See?

“You are the salt of the earth.” Matthew 5:13

And what does salt do? It adds flavor to food, and it preserves food and mummies and other things AND it cleans in the form of shampoos.  So, we’re supposed to spice up our world, preserve the good, and live clean lives.  Salt.

And, like the Anchovy, we’re surrounded by sharp-toothed predators with big stomachs…

“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  1 Peter 5:8

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”  Ephesians 6:12

So, swim like an anchovy, Christian.  Stick close to your salty sisters and brothers.  Shoal would be smart of you!

Remember, there’s safety in numbers.  Say it with me — fellowship.  It’s a lifesaver!

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”  Hebrews 10:25

The Anchovy Prayer: “Oh Father in heaven, thank you for loving me and making me the salt of the earth and light of the world.  Thank you for my brothers and sisters in Christ.  Help me to love them more, encourage them better, pray for them regularly and meet their needs when I can.

I confess I’ve been a little shellfish sometimes.  Make me an anchovy, a salty Christian for Christ!  In Jesus’ name, AMEN!”

Warfare III: The importance of your shield

A spartan’s shield is constantly under enemy attack.  A pro knows to get out of battle long enough to recharge his shield.  A noob (new player) is likely to stay in too long when the energy is drained from his shield and…Let’s just say, his rounds are short.

You are in a real battle, Spartan –a struggle for your soul ~  “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual {forces} of wickedness in the heavenly {places.}

You need strong armor ~Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day.” Ephesians 6:12-13

One of the most important pieces of armor is your shield; your shield of faith~  “[take] up the shield of faith…

Your faith repels enemy fire ~ “the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil {one.}   Ephesians 6:16

Do you take the time to recharge your faith?  “So,  faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ.” Romans 10:17

And did you know, your shield has a name?  Jesus. ~”But you, Oh Lord, are a shield about me.  You’re my glory.  You’re the lifter of my head.”Psalm 3;3

Warfare II: The importance of the team

It’s a chaotic scene of carnage.  Spartans falling on all sides as the battle rages on.  The enemy fires blasters, rocket launchers, sniper rifles and shotguns.  To survive, you stick with your team.   The  team works together to keep the enemy at bay and picks them off one by one.  If you’re caught in a corner, it’s your teammate who swoops in for the rescue.  The team covers your back.

Teamplay is good strategy in a computer game and a lifeline for the Christian.  Your teammates can save your “skinny little neck” as one Bible teacher puts it.  Do you have a team?  You need one.  There’s a chaotic scene of carnage raging all around you.  To survive, you need your team.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.”   If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!   Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”  Hebrew 10:25

Spiritual Warfare: Noob-vs-Pro.

A warrior, or a spartan in Halo-talk, needs a powerful arsenal to defeat the enemy.

You’re a spartan, Christian, in the spiritual realm, with a full arsenal of weapons at your fingertips.  Are you using them?

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”   2Corinthians 10:4

How many strongholds have you demolished lately?

Your only offensive weapon is your sword, you know — “…the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”  Ephesians 6:17   How sharp is yours?

In other words, are you a noob or a pro?

My son and his friends play “Halo”.  It’s a fighting, killing computer game.

Noobs (new players), invariably use the wrong weapons, and so are easily defeated.   tsk, tsk.

Are you defeated?  Have you been trying to defend your hill with only a pistol, like a noob?! (halo talk)  I mean, John 3:16 will get you just so far in the real world.

You might need to up your arsenal, spiritually,  by memorizing more verses.  Why?  Because the Word of God (our sword) is the truth.  It says so in our cheat code manual (the Bible). ..”The sum of Your Word is truth…”  in Psalm 119:160 and “…Your Word is truth.”  in John 17:17b.

Our enemy hates the truth.  REALLY!  It’s like using a rocket launcher when you speak the truth to the devil.

So, listen to this “pro” — something noobs quickly learn to do in the game or die.  Memorize LOTS of scripture, so you’re not “poned” by the enemy!
